Myrtou

Myrtou is a village located in the northwestern part of Cyprus, in the Morphou Bay area. It is situated in the Turkish-occupied territory of the island, de facto under the administration of Northern Cyprus since the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Historically, Myrtou was a mixed village, inhabited by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Agriculture, particularly citrus fruit production, was a significant part of the local economy. The village also had a notable archaeological site, which has been subject to damage and looting since 1974. The Agios Panteleimon monastery is located nearby and was an important religious site for the Greek Cypriot community. Following the events of 1974, the Greek Cypriot inhabitants were displaced, and the village was repopulated with Turkish Cypriots and settlers from Turkey. Consequently, Myrtou's demographics and cultural landscape have undergone significant changes. The current status of properties and religious sites belonging to displaced Greek Cypriots remains a contested issue.
