USCGC Fir (WLM-212)
The USCGC Fir (WLM-212) was a Juniper-class seagoing buoy tender of the United States Coast Guard. Homeported in Astoria, Oregon, her primary mission was to maintain aids to navigation, specifically buoys, along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and northern California. The Fir was also tasked with law enforcement, search and rescue, and environmental protection duties.
The Juniper-class buoy tenders are characterized by their advanced navigation and ship control systems, including dynamic positioning capabilities, allowing them to precisely maintain station while working with buoys. The Fir was equipped with a large crane for lifting and moving buoys of various sizes and weights. She had a crew complement of approximately 50 officers and enlisted personnel.
Decommissioned in 2018, the USCGC Fir ended a career of service spanning over two decades. The ship was replaced by a newer buoy tender in the Coast Guard fleet. After decommissioning, the Fir was transferred to the General Services Administration (GSA) for disposal. Her eventual fate, such as potential use as a museum ship or scrapping, was determined through the GSA process.
