HMS Camel (1813)

HMS Camel was a Conway-class sixth-rate frigate of the British Royal Navy, launched in 1813. These frigates were designed by Sir John Henslow and were characterized by their relatively shallow draft, intended to allow them to operate in shallower waters.

Service History:

Camel served during the later stages of the Napoleonic Wars, though her active involvement in major engagements was limited due to the war's winding down shortly after her commissioning. She was primarily deployed on patrols and convoy escort duties in the Mediterranean.

Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Camel, like many warships of the period, saw a reduction in activity. She continued to serve in peacetime, primarily on foreign stations, performing duties such as suppressing piracy and protecting British interests.

Fate:

Camel was eventually paid off (taken out of active service) and subsequently sold out of the navy. The exact date and circumstances of her disposal are not widely documented, but she was likely broken up shortly after her sale.

Class Characteristics (Conway-class):

  • Type: Sixth-rate frigate
  • Displacement: Approximately 1,200 tons
  • Armament: Typically 24 x 32-pounder guns on the main deck, with additional smaller guns on the quarterdeck and forecastle.
  • Crew: Approximately 175-200 men

Significance:

While HMS Camel did not participate in major historical battles, she represents a typical example of the workhorse frigates that formed the backbone of the Royal Navy during the 19th century. She contributed to maintaining British naval dominance and protecting maritime trade routes in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.
