Lamphun

Lamphun (ลำพูน) is a province (changwat) of Thailand, located in the upper northern region of the country. It is one of the smallest provinces in Thailand by area.

History:

Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Thailand and has a rich history. It was the capital of the Hariphunchai kingdom, a Mon kingdom that flourished from the 8th to the 13th centuries. King Adityaraja, the founder of the Hariphunchai dynasty, established the city as a center of Theravada Buddhism. Lamphun was eventually conquered by King Mengrai of the Lanna kingdom in 1281. Despite the conquest, Lamphun remained an important religious and cultural center within Lanna. The city's historical importance is reflected in its numerous ancient temples and archaeological sites.

Geography:

Lamphun is situated in the Ping River valley, surrounded by mountains. This geographical setting contributes to the province's relatively mild climate, particularly during the cool season. The terrain is primarily agricultural land interspersed with forested areas.

Administration:

The province is divided into eight districts (amphoe): Mueang Lamphun, Mae Tha, Ban Hong, Li, Thung Hua Chang, Pa Sang, Wiang Nong Long, and Ban Thi.

Culture:

Lamphun maintains a strong connection to its Mon heritage, evident in its architecture, traditions, and local dialect. The province is known for its hand-woven textiles, particularly cotton, and its agricultural products, including longan fruit. Important festivals include Loy Krathong and Songkran, as well as local celebrations specific to Lamphun's history and religious sites. The most prominent temple is Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, which houses a revered relic of the Buddha.

Economy:

Agriculture is a major component of Lamphun's economy, with rice, longan, and other fruits being important crops. Industry and tourism also contribute to the provincial economy.
