People's Alliance (Turkey)
The People's Alliance (Turkish: Cumhur İttifakı) is a political alliance in Turkey, formed primarily between the Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). The alliance was officially established in February 2018 in anticipation of the 2018 Turkish general election and presidential election.
The main stated goals of the People's Alliance are to safeguard national unity, promote Turkish identity, and ensure stability in the country. It generally advocates for a strong executive presidency and a more centralized form of government.
While the AK Parti and MHP are the core members, other smaller political parties have occasionally aligned with the People's Alliance. The alliance's policies typically reflect a blend of conservative, nationalist, and Islamist ideologies. It has generally supported strong state control over certain sectors of the economy and emphasizes traditional values.
The People's Alliance achieved a parliamentary majority in the 2018 general election, allowing them to control the legislative agenda. The alliance also supported Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's successful bid for the presidency in the same election.
The alliance's strength and composition have fluctuated over time, influenced by shifts in public opinion, policy disagreements, and strategic considerations by individual parties. Its future trajectory remains subject to the evolving political landscape of Turkey.
