Independent Division (Greece)

An Independent Division (Ανεξάρτητη Μεραρχία, Anexártiti Merarchía) in the Hellenic Army (the land forces of Greece) is a military formation that operates autonomously from a larger corps or army headquarters. Unlike standard divisions which are organic components of a larger higher command, an Independent Division reports directly to a higher-level command, typically a corps or even the General Staff of National Defence (ΓΕΕΘΑ).

The designation "Independent" signifies that the division has a specific strategic or operational role, often involving the defense of critical areas or conducting specialized missions, without needing to integrate directly with the operational plans of other divisions within a conventional corps structure. This autonomy allows for greater flexibility and responsiveness in dynamic situations.

These divisions are typically formed when a particular area or threat requires a divisional-sized force but doesn't neatly fit within the standard organizational structure of the army.
