Primrose Path (1940 film)

Primrose Path is a 1940 American drama film directed by Gregory La Cava, starring Ginger Rogers and Joel McCrea. The film is based on the 1935 play of the same name by Robert L. Buckner and Walter Hart, which itself was adapted from the 1934 novel February Hill by Victoria Lincoln.

The story revolves around Ellie May Adams (Rogers), a young woman from a poor background whose family is known for its scandalous behavior and perceived immorality. She falls in love with Wallace Thompson (McCrea), a more refined and idealistic young man. Ellie attempts to keep her family's reputation a secret from Wallace, fearing that it will ruin their relationship. The film explores themes of class differences, social stigma, and the struggle to overcome one's environment.

Marjorie Rambeau received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ellie May's mother, Mamie. The film was controversial upon its release due to its portrayal of prostitution and its perceived challenge to conventional morality, although these elements were significantly toned down from the source material to meet the standards of the Production Code.
