Sergey Nikitin (musician)

Sergey Yakovlevich Nikitin (Сергей Яковлевич Никитин; born March 8, 1944) is a prominent Russian composer, singer, physicist, and songwriter, widely known for his contributions to Russian bard music (also known as author's song).

Nikitin studied physics and mathematics at Moscow State University, graduating in 1968. He later earned a Ph.D. in physics. While pursuing his scientific career, music remained a constant passion.

He began writing songs in the early 1960s, initially setting poems by other authors to music. He is particularly known for his collaborations with poets like Boris Pasternak, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and Robert Burns (in translation). His songs often feature simple, yet evocative melodies and thoughtful lyrics.

Nikitin formed a musical duo with his wife, Tatyana Nikitina, in the 1970s. Together, they achieved considerable popularity in the Soviet Union and beyond. Their repertoire includes songs for children, romantic ballads, and socially conscious pieces.

Beyond his work with Tatyana, Sergey Nikitin has composed music for theater and film. His songs have been featured in numerous popular Soviet and Russian movies.
