Robert Murray (artist)
Robert Murray (born 1936) is a Canadian-American abstract sculptor and painter. He is best known for his large-scale, minimalist sculptures, often constructed from aluminum or steel, that are characterized by their clean lines, elegant curves, and subtle use of color.
Murray was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and studied at the Regina College School of Art (now the University of Regina). He moved to New York City in the 1960s, becoming part of the burgeoning minimalist art movement. He quickly gained recognition for his sculptures, which often explore the relationship between form, space, and light.
His work is included in the collections of numerous major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the National Gallery of Canada, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He has also created several large-scale public art commissions for locations around the world.
Murray's artistic practice also includes painting, often working with acrylics on canvas to create abstract compositions that echo the forms and concerns of his sculptural work. He lives and works in Hopewell, New Jersey.
