Louis Schweitzer (businessman)
Louis Schweitzer (born July 8, 1942) is a French businessman. He served as the chairman and CEO of Renault from 1992 to 2005, and then as chairman until 2009.
Schweitzer graduated from the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and the École nationale d'administration (ENA). He began his career in the French civil service, holding positions in the Budget Ministry and the Prime Minister's office.
In 1986, he joined Renault as Director of Strategic Planning. He rose through the ranks, becoming CFO in 1988 and General Manager in 1990. He was appointed CEO in 1992, succeeding Raymond Lévy.
During his tenure as CEO, Schweitzer is credited with turning Renault around from a period of financial difficulty. He oversaw the company's privatization, its alliance with Nissan, and its expansion into new markets. He retired as CEO in 2005 and was succeeded by Carlos Ghosn. He remained chairman of Renault until 2009.
Schweitzer has served on the boards of various companies, including L'Oréal and BNP Paribas. He has also been involved in several philanthropic endeavors. He is a Commandeur of the Légion d'honneur.
