Movement for Social Democracy (Georgia)

The Movement for Social Democracy (MSD) (Georgian: სოციალ-დემოკრატთა მოძრაობა, romanized: sotsial-demokratt'a modzraoba) is a social-democratic political party in Georgia. Founded in 1991, it emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union and played a significant role in Georgian politics throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The party, initially associated with President Eduard Shevardnadze, subsequently underwent various internal power struggles and shifts in political alignment.

While initially enjoying considerable electoral success, the MSD's popularity waned following the Rose Revolution in 2003. The party's platform traditionally emphasized economic reform alongside a commitment to democratic principles and strengthening Georgia's relations with the West. However, accusations of corruption and authoritarian tendencies within the party during its time in power have contributed to its decline in public support. Its current political influence is significantly diminished compared to its peak during the Shevardnadze era. The party remains active in Georgian politics, although it is no longer a major force. Further research is needed to fully document the party's current organizational structure, political positions, and ongoing activities.
