Joe Cain (historian of science)
Joe Cain is a British historian of science specializing in the history of eugenics, genetics, evolution, and Darwinism. He is Professor of History and Philosophy of Biology in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at University College London (UCL).
Cain's research has focused on the historical development of scientific ideas, particularly within the context of their social and political implications. He has published extensively on the history of eugenics in Britain and the United States, exploring the ways in which scientific theories were used to justify social inequalities. His work often emphasizes the complex interplay between scientific research, public policy, and popular culture. He also examines the history of genetics, evolutionary biology and Darwinism, particularly concerning their reception, adaptation, and influence within wider historical contexts.
Cain is actively involved in public engagement with science. He regularly lectures on the history of science to diverse audiences and contributes to museum exhibitions and other public outreach initiatives. He has also been involved in curatorial work with the Grant Museum of Zoology at UCL.
