Levellers (band)
The Levellers are an English rock band formed in Brighton, England in 1988. They are best known for their politically and socially aware lyrics, their energetic live performances, and their blend of folk, punk, and rock music.
The band's core lineup has remained largely consistent throughout their history, consisting of Mark Chadwick (vocals, guitar), Jeremy Cunningham (bass, bouzouki), Charlie Heather (drums), Jon Sevink (fiddle), and Simon Friend (guitar, banjo, mandolin).
The Levellers achieved mainstream success in the early to mid-1990s with albums such as Levelling the Land (1991) and Zeitgeist (1995), both of which reached the top of the UK Albums Chart. Their music often addresses themes of social justice, environmentalism, and anti-establishment sentiment.
The band has a strong connection to the festival scene and are known for their dedicated fanbase, often referred to as "the Levellers collective." They have hosted their own annual festival, Beautiful Days, since 2003.
Although their commercial success waned after the mid-1990s, the Levellers have continued to tour and release albums, maintaining a loyal following and remaining a prominent force in the British alternative music scene. Their enduring popularity is often attributed to their consistent lyrical themes, engaging live shows, and commitment to their core musical identity.
