Durian

Durian (/ˈdʊriən, ˈdjʊəriən/) is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio. There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit. Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market.

The durian is native to Southeast Asia and is well-known for its distinctive size, strong odor, and thorn-covered rind. The fruit can grow up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) long and 15 centimetres (6 inches) in diameter, and it typically weighs between 1 and 3 kilograms (2 to 7 pounds).

The name "durian" is derived from the Malay word duri (meaning "thorn"), with the suffix -an (used to form a noun).

The edible flesh emits a pungent odor that is considered offensive to some, yet highly palatable to others. The odor has been described as resembling gym socks, rotting onions, or sewage. Due to its strong smell, durian is banned from many hotels, public transportation systems, and public spaces in Southeast Asia.

The fruit is rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Durian is often consumed fresh, but it can also be used in a variety of culinary preparations, such as desserts, candies, and beverages. The seeds can also be eaten after being roasted or boiled.

Durian is an important economic crop in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The fruit is also increasingly popular in other parts of the world, including China and Europe.
