Charles May (bishop)

Charles Henry May (born June 18, 1938) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Bishop of Marquette from 1996 to 2005.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, May was ordained to the priesthood on May 1, 1965, for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He served in various parish assignments and as the archdiocesan director of vocations. In 1991, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Naiera and Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, receiving episcopal consecration on March 20, 1991.

On November 8, 1995, May was appointed Bishop of Marquette and was installed on January 27, 1996. He served in this role until his resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II on November 9, 2005. His resignation was reportedly due to health reasons. Since then, he has resided in retirement within the Archdiocese of Chicago, assisting with confirmations and other priestly duties as needed.
