Custom Robo (1999 video game)
Custom Robo is a Japanese-exclusive action role-playing game developed by NOISE and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 in December 1999. The game centers around customizable robots called "Robos" which are used to battle in virtual arenas. Players assume the role of a young protagonist seeking to become a Robo Commander.
The core gameplay loop involves customizing a Robo with various parts, including bodies, legs, arms, and guns. Different part combinations affect the Robo's stats, mobility, and combat capabilities. After customizing their Robo, players participate in battles against other Robo Commanders. Battles take place within enclosed arenas called "Holosseums." The objective is to deplete the opponent's energy bar by attacking with the Robo's weaponry.
The game features a single-player story mode where the protagonist progresses through a narrative, battling increasingly challenging opponents and unlocking new Robo parts. Multiplayer battles are also a key component, allowing players to compete against each other.
Custom Robo on the Nintendo 64 laid the groundwork for a series of sequels and iterations on other Nintendo platforms, including the GameCube, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS. The core concepts of customization and arena-based Robo combat have remained central to the series.
