USS Springfield (CL-66)
The USS Springfield (CL-66) was a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. She was commissioned in September 1944 and saw service in the Pacific Theater during the latter stages of World War II. Springfield participated in operations including the Philippines campaign and the Okinawa campaign, providing anti-aircraft cover and shore bombardment.
Following World War II, Springfield was placed in reserve. She was reactivated and converted into a Providence-class guided missile cruiser (CLG-7) in the late 1950s. As a guided missile cruiser, Springfield served as flagship for the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea and later as flagship for the Second Fleet in the Atlantic. She was equipped with Talos long-range surface-to-air missiles.
Springfield was decommissioned again in 1974 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1980. She was subsequently sold for scrapping. The ship received three battle stars for her World War II service.
