Arys (river)

The Arys is a river located in southern Kazakhstan. It is a left tributary of the Syr Darya, one of Central Asia's major rivers. The Arys flows generally northwestward from the Karatau Mountains, traversing a semi-arid landscape before joining the Syr Darya.

The river's length is approximately 378 kilometers (235 miles). Its drainage basin covers an area of about 14,900 square kilometers (5,750 square miles).

The Arys is primarily fed by snowmelt and rainfall. Its flow is highly variable, with peak flows occurring during the spring and early summer months. In the past, the river was prone to flooding.

The river's water is used for irrigation, supporting agriculture in the surrounding region. Settlements along the Arys river benefit from its proximity to a fresh water source, though the reliability of that source is subject to seasonal variations and historical water management practices impacting the Syr Darya basin as a whole.
