National Institute of Statistics (Cameroon)
The National Institute of Statistics (NIS), known in French as Institut National de la Statistique (INS), is the primary institution in Cameroon responsible for the production, analysis, and dissemination of official statistics. It serves as the central coordinating body for the national statistical system, working to ensure the quality, relevance, and accessibility of statistical data for decision-making, research, and public information.
The NIS is tasked with conducting censuses and surveys, compiling national accounts, producing price indices, and monitoring social and economic indicators. It collaborates with other government ministries, agencies, and international organizations to improve statistical methodologies and data collection techniques. The institute plays a crucial role in providing reliable data to support government policy formulation, development planning, and monitoring of progress towards national and international development goals.
Its work encompasses a wide range of statistical domains including demography, economy, social affairs, agriculture, and the environment. The NIS also has a mandate to train statisticians and promote statistical literacy within the country. The organization operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development (MINEPAT).
