John Rankin (British politician)
John Rankin (born 19 June 1890, died 19 January 1973) was a Scottish Labour politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow Tradeston from 1935 to 1955, and then for Glasgow Govan from 1955 to 1970.
Rankin was a prominent figure in Glasgow politics for many years, known for his strong socialist views and his advocacy for working-class communities. Prior to entering Parliament, he worked as a teacher. His political career was characterised by a commitment to social justice and improved living conditions for ordinary people.
During his time in the House of Commons, Rankin served on various parliamentary committees and participated actively in debates on a range of issues, including housing, education, and industrial relations. He was a staunch supporter of the National Health Service and other key Labour policies.
Rankin retired from Parliament in 1970, having served for over 34 years. He remained active in local politics and community affairs until his death in 1973.
