Laramie station (CTA Douglas branch)
Laramie station is a defunct elevated station on the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Douglas branch, which is now part of the Blue Line. It was located at Laramie Avenue and Congress Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago. The station opened on June 21, 1958, replacing the nearby Kildare station and other older stations along the Congress Line that were demolished to make way for the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290).
The Laramie station served as a local stop on the Douglas branch. It consisted of two side platforms serving two tracks. The station house was located at street level, and passengers accessed the platforms via stairs.
Laramie station closed on April 28, 2002, as part of the CTA's Congress Branch Renovation Project. A new station, Central station, was built approximately halfway between the former Laramie and Cicero stations to better serve the community. The closure of Laramie station was controversial, with some residents protesting the loss of a convenient transit option. The station structure was subsequently demolished.
