Benta (instrument)

The benta is a traditional musical instrument from Eritrea and Sudan. It is a type of harp, specifically a bow harp. Characterized by its arched shape, the benta typically features a curved wooden neck to which multiple strings are attached. These strings, generally made of animal gut or more modern synthetic materials, are stretched across a resonator, often made of wood or gourd. The number of strings can vary.

The benta is played by plucking the strings with the fingers. It is primarily used in folk music and traditional ceremonies in the regions where it is found. The instrument is an important part of the cultural heritage and musical traditions of the Eritrean and Sudanese people.
