East Dorset (UK Parliament constituency)
East Dorset was a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament from 1983 until 2024. It covered the eastern part of the Dorset county in South West England.
History:
The constituency was created in 1983 from parts of the former Dorset North and Dorset East constituencies. It was abolished in 2024 following a boundary review, with its area being distributed between the new constituencies of North Dorset and East Dorset and Poole.
Boundaries:
East Dorset encompassed a largely rural area including the market towns of Wimborne Minster and Verwood, and numerous villages. The boundaries were defined by the Boundary Commission for England and changed slightly over time to account for population shifts.
Members of Parliament:
- 1983 - 1997: Sir Peter Fry (Conservative)
- 1997 - 2015: Christopher Fraser (Conservative)
- 2015 - 2024: Michael Tomlinson (Conservative)
Election Results:
East Dorset was considered a safe Conservative seat throughout its existence. The Conservative party consistently won the seat with a significant majority. Detailed election results for each general election held during the constituency's existence can be found on election websites such as those maintained by the BBC and House of Commons Library.
