Fairport Convention (album)
Fairport Convention is the debut studio album by the British folk-rock band Fairport Convention. It was released in June 1968 by Polydor Records. The album is considered a significant work in the development of British folk-rock, blending traditional folk elements with American rock and roll influences, particularly evident in its covers of American songs.
The album features the original lineup of the band: Richard Thompson (guitar, vocals), Simon Nicol (guitar, vocals), Ashley Hutchings (bass guitar, vocals), Judy Dyble (vocals, autoharp, piano), and Martin Lamble (drums).
The tracklist includes a mix of traditional folk songs, original compositions, and covers of contemporary songs by artists like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Notably, the album includes renditions of "Chelsea Morning" (Joni Mitchell), "Suzanne" (Leonard Cohen), and "I Don't Know Where I Stand" (Joni Mitchell). Original compositions include "If (Stomp)" and "End of a Lesson."
The album's sound is characterized by Dyble's clear vocals, Thompson's distinctive guitar playing, and the band's overall energetic and raw performance style. While not an immediate commercial success, Fairport Convention established the band's reputation and laid the foundation for their subsequent, more influential albums. It is viewed as a crucial early entry in the British folk-rock genre, showcasing the band's initial exploration of combining traditional and contemporary musical styles. The album's lack of a defined folk direction compared to later work is a distinct characteristic.
