Tom Anderson (fiddler)

Tom Anderson (1910-1991) was a highly influential Scottish fiddler and composer from the Shetland Islands. He is considered one of the most important figures in the preservation and promotion of traditional Shetland fiddle music.

Anderson was born in Eshaness, Northmavine, Shetland. He learned to play the fiddle from his father, Gideon Anderson, and other local musicians. He developed a distinctive style characterized by a strong sense of rhythm, intricate ornamentation, and a deep understanding of the traditional tunes of Shetland.

He was a dedicated teacher, passing on his knowledge and skills to generations of young fiddlers. He taught extensively both privately and in schools, and his influence is evident in the playing of many prominent Shetland musicians today. Notably, he co-founded the Shetland Folk Society in 1960 to help preserve and promote Shetland culture, particularly its musical traditions.

Anderson composed numerous tunes, many of which have become staples of the Shetland fiddle repertoire. These compositions reflect his deep connection to the landscapes and culture of Shetland.

His contributions to Shetland music were recognized with numerous awards, including an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire).
