Laththi
A laththi (also spelled lathi, laathi, or lathi) is a heavy stick, often made of bamboo reinforced with metal rings, used as a weapon or for crowd control. It is commonly associated with law enforcement in South Asia, particularly in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Laththis are typically longer than a baton, allowing for a wider range of movement and leverage. They are used for striking, pushing, and deflecting attacks. While primarily used for defensive purposes and crowd management, a laththi can inflict serious injury if used with excessive force.
The use of laththis by police forces in South Asia has a long history, dating back to the colonial era. They remain a standard tool for maintaining order, particularly in situations where firearms are deemed inappropriate or unnecessary. However, their use has also been a subject of controversy, with concerns raised about excessive force and potential for abuse.
