899 Jokaste

899 Jokaste is a main-belt asteroid discovered on August 3, 1918, by Max Wolf at Heidelberg Observatory in Germany. It is named after Jocasta, the queen of Thebes in Greek mythology, and mother/wife of Oedipus.

Jokaste is a relatively large asteroid, estimated to be about 61 kilometers in diameter. Its surface is dark, placing it in the C-type asteroid classification, indicating a carbonaceous composition. This means it is likely composed of primitive materials rich in carbon, similar to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites.

The orbit of Jokaste lies within the main asteroid belt, located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Its orbital period is approximately 5.4 years. Observations of Jokaste have contributed to our understanding of the distribution and characteristics of asteroids in the main belt. Spectroscopic analysis has helped to determine its surface composition and albedo.
