John Yates (bishop)

John Yates (born 17 March 1925, died 23 October 2008) was an Anglican bishop in the late 20th century.

Yates was educated at Wallasey Grammar School, Jesus College, Cambridge, and Westcott House, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1950 and began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Birkenhead Priory. He then became a Fellow and Dean of Selwyn College, Cambridge, before being appointed Principal of Bishop's College, Cheshunt in 1959.

In 1972, he was elevated to the episcopate as Bishop of Whitby, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of York. In 1975, he became Bishop of Gloucester, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. During his time as Bishop of Gloucester, he played an active role in the House of Lords and contributed to debates on various social and ethical issues.

He was a noted scholar and author, contributing to theological discussions and publications. Following his retirement, he continued to be active in the Church of England. He died in October 2008.
