Calcata

Calcata is a medieval village in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy, located approximately 47 kilometers (29 miles) north of Rome. It sits dramatically atop a volcanic spur overlooking the Treja Valley.

Calcata is notable for its history as a haven for artists and bohemians starting in the 1960s. The village, largely abandoned in the 1930s due to fears of collapse, was later repopulated by these individuals who were attracted to its isolated location, unique architecture, and artistic atmosphere. They restored many of the abandoned houses and contributed to the village's resurgence.

The village is characterized by its narrow, winding streets, stone houses, and a medieval castle, the Palazzo Baronale. The main church, the Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù, historically housed what was believed to be the foreskin of Jesus, a relic which was kept until it disappeared in 1983.

Calcata is now a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors with its artistic heritage, medieval architecture, and picturesque location. It is considered one of Italy's most beautiful and unique villages. Its economy relies primarily on tourism, with several art galleries, artisan workshops, and restaurants catering to visitors.
