Richard Dowse (priest)
Richard Dowse (1772-1841) was an Irish Anglican clergyman who served as the Dean of Emly from 1806 until his death. He was born in County Limerick and educated at Trinity College Dublin, graduating with a BA in 1793 and subsequently ordained.
Dowse was known for his strong Tory political views and his opposition to Catholic Emancipation. His appointment as Dean of Emly was considered a significant benefice. He was a controversial figure, often engaging in public disputes with those who disagreed with his political and religious perspectives.
Besides his ecclesiastical duties, Dowse was also a landowner in County Limerick. He married twice, first to Elizabeth Massy, and after her death, to Sarah Lloyd. He had children from both marriages. His later years were marked by declining health, and he died in 1841.
