Andy Russell (American football)
Andy Russell (born August 1, 1941) is a former American professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played his entire twelve-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, from 1963 to 1976.
Russell played college football at the University of Missouri, where he was a two-time All-American. He was drafted by the Steelers in the 16th round of the 1963 NFL Draft.
Initially a part-time player, Russell established himself as a starter in 1966 and quickly became a cornerstone of the Steelers' defense. He was known for his intelligence, tackling ability, and leadership. Russell was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection (1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975) and was named All-Pro three times (1972, 1974, 1975).
He was a key member of the "Steel Curtain" defense that helped the Steelers win Super Bowls IX and X. Russell retired after the 1976 season.
After his playing career, Russell pursued a career in business, founding and running Russell Reinforced Plastics, a company involved in manufacturing.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988. Although recognized as one of the great linebackers of his era, he has not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
