Ivan Safronov (1990)

Ivan Safronov (born 18 May 1990) is a Russian journalist who worked for the newspapers Kommersant and Vedomosti, and later as an advisor to Dmitry Rogozin at Roscosmos. He is known for his reporting on the Russian military and space industries.

In July 2020, Safronov was arrested by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on charges of treason. The FSB alleged that he collected and passed classified military information to a NATO country (reportedly the Czech Republic) in 2017, accusations he strongly denies. Safronov and his supporters maintain that the charges are politically motivated and related to his journalistic work, particularly his reporting on Russian arms sales and military activities.

Safronov's arrest and subsequent trial have drawn widespread condemnation from journalists, human rights organizations, and international bodies, who view the case as an attack on freedom of the press and independent reporting in Russia. He was sentenced to 22 years in a strict-regime penal colony in September 2022. His conviction has been upheld on appeal.
