62nd Infantry Regiment (PA)

The 62nd Infantry Regiment was a Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in August and September of 1861, and mustered into service for a three-year term on September 13, 1861.

The regiment was primarily composed of men from Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, and Washington counties. Its first colonel was Samuel W. Black.

The 62nd Pennsylvania saw extensive action throughout the war, particularly in the Eastern Theater. It participated in numerous major battles, including:

  • Peninsula Campaign (1862)
  • Seven Days Battles (1862)
  • Antietam (1862)
  • Fredericksburg (1862)
  • Chancellorsville (1863)
  • Gettysburg (1863) - where they were heavily engaged.
  • Wilderness (1864)
  • Spotsylvania Court House (1864)
  • Cold Harbor (1864)
  • Siege of Petersburg (1864-1865)

The regiment suffered significant casualties during its service. After Gettysburg, the regiment was consolidated with remnants of other Pennsylvania regiments to form a veteran battalion. This battalion continued to serve until the end of the war.

The 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered out of service on June 27, 1865. Their service contributed to the Union victory and helped preserve the United States.
