John Kongos

John Kongos (born 6 August 1945) is a South African singer and songwriter, best known for his hit singles "He's Gonna Step on You Again" (1971) and "Tokoloshe Man" (1971).

Kongos was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He achieved international success in the early 1970s with his unique blend of rock, pop, and African rhythms. His music was characterized by its use of synthesizers and catchy melodies.

"He's Gonna Step on You Again" reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and was later covered by Happy Mondays in 1990. The Happy Mondays version reached number one in the UK, bringing Kongos's music to a new audience. "Tokoloshe Man" also achieved considerable success, particularly in Europe and South Africa.

Kongos' other notable songs include "Won't You Join Me" and "Great White Wonder". He released several albums throughout the 1970s.

After a period of relative obscurity, Kongos' music has experienced a resurgence in popularity, thanks in part to the Happy Mondays' cover of "He's Gonna Step on You Again" and its continued use in film and television. He remains a notable figure in the history of South African popular music. His sons, collectively known as the band KONGOS, have also achieved international success.
