Vivonne Bay (South Australia)

Vivonne Bay is a bay and a locality located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia, approximately 47 kilometres (29 mi) southwest of Kingscote. The bay is a broad, sandy arc facing south into the Southern Ocean.

The locality of Vivonne Bay encompasses not only the bay itself but also a significant area of surrounding land. This area includes agricultural land, native bushland, and coastal dunes.

Historically, Vivonne Bay served as a port for agricultural produce, particularly wool, from the surrounding district. A jetty was constructed in the bay to facilitate shipping; however, it was eventually dismantled due to damage from storms and changing shipping needs.

The bay is known for its long, sweeping beach, which is popular for fishing, swimming, and surfing. However, due to strong currents and waves, caution is advised. The area also boasts diverse wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, goannas, and various bird species.

The mouth of the Harriet River is located at the western end of the bay.

Vivonne Bay was once voted Australia's best beach in a university study, based on factors such as its pristine condition, privacy, and natural beauty. Tourism plays a significant role in the local economy, with visitors drawn to the bay's scenic appeal and recreational opportunities. Accommodation options are available within the locality, ranging from holiday rentals to a caravan park.
