John Buchanan (biologist)
John Buchanan is a marine biologist and oceanographer known for his research on benthic communities, particularly those found in the North Sea. He spent a significant portion of his career at the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats, England, affiliated with Newcastle University.
Buchanan's research focused on understanding the structure, function, and dynamics of seabed ecosystems. His work included studies on the impact of pollution and other anthropogenic stressors on marine benthic fauna. He contributed to the development of methodologies for assessing the health and biodiversity of marine environments, particularly in relation to industrial activities such as offshore oil and gas extraction.
He published extensively on the ecology of marine invertebrates and the factors influencing their distribution and abundance. His research contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of the North Sea ecosystem and informed marine conservation efforts.
