Drongen

Drongen is a village in the municipality of Ghent, in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. It is located along the Lys (Leie) river, to the west of the city of Ghent proper. Historically an independent municipality, it was merged into Ghent in 1977.

Drongen is known for the Drongen Abbey, a Benedictine abbey that has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of the region. The abbey has a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages, and has been rebuilt and renovated several times. It continues to function as a monastery today.

Besides the abbey, Drongen also offers residential areas, local shops, and some green spaces. Due to its proximity to Ghent, it is a popular residential area for those working in the city but seeking a quieter living environment. The village retains a distinct character, separate from the more urban center of Ghent.
