Blue Mountain Lake (New York lake)
Blue Mountain Lake is a lake located in the central Adirondack Mountains of New York State, within the town of Indian Lake in Hamilton County. It is one of the largest lakes in the Adirondack Park and is known for its scenic beauty, numerous islands, and historical significance as a transportation hub and summer resort area.
The lake's name is derived from Blue Mountain, which rises prominently to the south of the lake. Blue Mountain Lake is fed by several smaller lakes and streams, including Utowana Lake and Eagle Lake. Its outlet is the Marion River, which flows into Raquette Lake.
Historically, Blue Mountain Lake was a crucial link in the Adirondack waterway system, connecting via canoe carries to other major lakes and rivers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a popular destination for wealthy tourists, leading to the construction of several large hotels and camps. Many of these elaborate camps, or "Great Camps," are still present today, often passed down through generations of families.
Today, Blue Mountain Lake remains a popular destination for recreation, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and camping. The Adirondack Museum, located on the shores of the lake, showcases the history and culture of the Adirondack region. The community of Blue Mountain Lake, located on the eastern shore, provides services and amenities for visitors. The lake is also a popular subject for artists and photographers, who are drawn to its stunning natural beauty.
