HMS Cyane (1806)
HMS Cyane was an 18-gun Swan-class ship sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1806. She participated in several notable engagements during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 before being captured by the USS Constitution in 1815, shortly after the Treaty of Ghent was signed (though unknown to both vessels at the time).
Service History:
Cyane was initially deployed in the English Channel and the Atlantic, performing duties such as convoy escort and patrol. She participated in operations against French and Spanish shipping. During this period, she saw action against privateers and smaller enemy warships.
In 1815, while sailing in company with HMS Levant, Cyane encountered the American frigate USS Constitution under Captain Charles Stewart. A lengthy engagement ensued, and after a fierce battle, both Cyane and Levant were forced to surrender to the superior firepower of the Constitution.
Fate:
Following her capture, Cyane was taken into the United States Navy. However, Levant was briefly recaptured by the British before eventually being lost off the coast of Africa. Cyane served in the U.S. Navy for a short period before being sold. Her fate after being sold out of US Navy service is less well documented.
