K-5 (missile)

The K-5 is a Russian (formerly Soviet) air-to-air missile. It was one of the first operational air-to-air missiles developed by the Soviet Union. The K-5 (NATO reporting name: AA-1 Alkali) was designed primarily for use against strategic bombers and other large aircraft. It was deployed on interceptor aircraft, such as the MiG-17PFU and MiG-19PM. The missile utilized beam-riding guidance, requiring the launching aircraft to maintain a constant radar lock on the target throughout the missile's flight. This reliance on continuous radar lock was a significant limitation. Development began in the early 1950s and the missile entered service in the late 1950s. Several variants were produced, including versions with improved range and reliability. The K-5 was eventually superseded by more advanced air-to-air missiles with improved guidance systems and capabilities.
