Pfeiffera
Pfeiffera is a genus of epiphytic cacti belonging to the tribe Rhipsalideae within the Cactaceae family. These cacti are native to South America, specifically found in regions ranging from Bolivia and Argentina to Peru and Brazil.
Pfeiffera species are characterized by their slender, branching stems that often hang or cascade. They lack the spines typical of many cacti, instead possessing small areoles that may have bristles or hairs. The stems are often cylindrical or angled.
The flowers of Pfeiffera are generally small and bell-shaped, typically white or cream-colored. They are followed by small, berry-like fruits.
Pfeiffera cacti are often cultivated as ornamental plants, particularly for hanging baskets and containers. They prefer bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Overwatering should be avoided.
Several species have been moved between Pfeiffera and other genera within Rhipsalideae, most notably Lepismium. Taxonomic classification within this tribe remains somewhat fluid and subject to ongoing research based on morphological and molecular data. Common species previously classified under Pfeiffera now often appear under Lepismium.
