MUDC (New York City Subway car)

The MUDC, standing for Multiple Unit Door Control, was a feature implemented on certain New York City Subway cars that allowed the motorman (train operator) to centrally control all the doors of the train from the cab. This system provided enhanced control and efficiency compared to older systems where train operators needed to manually control doors car by car or rely on trainmen to manually open and close doors.

The MUDC system utilized electrical circuits to control the pneumatic door operating mechanisms on each car. When the motorman activated the MUDC system, all doors on the train would open or close simultaneously, significantly reducing station dwell time and improving train service reliability. This technology was gradually introduced on newer subway car fleets and retrofitted onto some older models as part of system-wide modernization efforts. The implementation of MUDC marked a significant advancement in subway car technology and played a crucial role in improving the efficiency and safety of the New York City Subway system. It also contributed to reducing the manpower required for train operation on some lines.
