Patricius (usurper)

Patricius was a Roman usurper who briefly challenged the authority of the Western Roman Empire in 307 AD. Very little is known about his life or reign. He is primarily mentioned in connection with the revolt against Severus II, the emperor appointed by Galerius.

According to historical accounts, Patricius was likely a local leader or official in Britain. Following the elevation of Constantine the Great to emperor in 306, Severus II attempted to reassert central control over the region. This sparked unrest, and Patricius was proclaimed emperor by his troops, possibly in Britain.

Patricius's rule was extremely short-lived. He was quickly defeated and executed, likely by forces loyal to Constantine. His rebellion highlights the instability and power struggles within the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy. The brevity of his reign and the limited historical sources leave significant gaps in our understanding of his motives, supporters, and the specific events surrounding his usurpation. He is considered a minor figure in the overall history of the late Roman Empire, primarily noted for the chaotic conditions of the time and the ease with which ambitious individuals could attempt to seize power.
