Starseed (band)
Starseed was a Canadian electronic music duo formed in the early 1990s. The group consisted of Ann-Marie MacDonald (vocals, lyrics) and Kevin Staples (programming, production).
Starseed is best known for their 1993 single, "Sweetness," which achieved significant commercial success in Canada, reaching number one on the RPM Dance chart. "Sweetness" was also popular internationally, particularly in Europe.
The band's music blended elements of house, techno, and pop, characterized by MacDonald's ethereal vocals and Staples' driving electronic rhythms. Their lyrics often explored themes of spirituality and transcendence, reflecting an interest in New Age philosophies.
While "Sweetness" remained their biggest hit, Starseed released other singles and an album, First Light, in 1993. The album featured a collection of their previously released singles and new material.
After First Light, Starseed largely disappeared from the music scene. MacDonald later pursued other creative endeavors, while Staples continued to work in music production. Despite their relatively short period of mainstream success, Starseed is remembered for their influential contribution to the Canadian electronic music landscape of the early 1990s.
