USF&G
USF&G, an abbreviation for United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company, was a major American insurance company. Founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1896, it primarily focused on surety bonds and casualty insurance. Over the course of the 20th century, USF&G grew to become one of the largest insurance companies in the United States, offering a wide array of insurance products and services.
The company’s core business involved providing surety bonds for construction projects and other types of contracts, guaranteeing the completion of work or fulfillment of obligations. They also offered casualty insurance covering areas such as workers' compensation, auto liability, and general liability.
In 1998, USF&G was acquired by The St. Paul Companies, Inc. Following the acquisition, the USF&G brand was phased out, and the operations were integrated into The St. Paul Companies. In 2004, The St. Paul Companies merged with Travelers Property Casualty Corp. to form St. Paul Travelers, which later became Travelers Companies, Inc. As a result, the USF&G name is no longer in active use within the insurance industry. However, the historical significance of USF&G as a major player in surety and casualty insurance remains noteworthy.
