Marius Nygaard (judge)
Marius Nygaard (born January 15, 1838, died May 10, 1912) was a Norwegian judge and legal scholar. He is best known for his contributions to Norwegian legal terminology and jurisprudence, particularly in the areas of civil procedure and property law.
Nygaard served as a professor of law at the Royal Frederick University (now the University of Oslo) for many years. He was later appointed a judge of the Norwegian Supreme Court, where he served from 1887 to 1908.
Nygaard was a prolific writer, authoring numerous books and articles on various aspects of Norwegian law. His works were highly influential in shaping the development of Norwegian legal thought and practice. His scholarly work focused on clarifying and systematizing legal concepts, making them more accessible to students and practitioners. He also played a key role in the standardization of legal Norwegian language.
