Live in Seattle (John Coltrane album)
Live in Seattle is a live album by jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, recorded in 1965 and released posthumously in 1971 on the Impulse! Records label. The album documents a performance by Coltrane's "classic quartet" featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, augmented by Pharoah Sanders on tenor saxophone and alto flute, and Donald Garrett on bass clarinet and bass.
The recording took place at The Penthouse, a jazz club in Seattle, Washington, during a residency from September 26-30, 1965. This performance captures Coltrane's exploration of increasingly avant-garde and free jazz styles. The extended improvisations and modal playing showcased on Live in Seattle reflect the direction Coltrane's music was taking in his final years. The album is considered a significant document of this period, offering insight into the evolving musical relationship between Coltrane and Sanders, as well as the intensity and energy of the expanded ensemble. Its release provided further evidence of the innovative and often challenging soundscapes Coltrane was creating before his death in 1967.
