Handique

Handique (অসমীয়া: Handique) is a surname commonly found among members of the Assamese Kalita caste in the Indian state of Assam. The name is believed to be derived from the word "Handikoi," which historically referred to a high-ranking officer responsible for managing elephants (known as "Hati" in Assamese) within the Ahom kingdom's administrative structure. The Handiques were traditionally associated with positions of power and influence within the Ahom society and later during British rule. Over time, "Handikoi" evolved into the more common surname "Handique."
