Istra (Moskva)
Istra is a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia, located on the Istra River, 56 kilometers (35 mi) west of Moscow. It serves as the administrative center of Istrinsky District.
History:
Istra was founded in 1589 as the village of Voskresenskoye around the Resurrection Monastery (Novo-Iyerusalimsky Monastery). The monastery, commissioned by Patriarch Nikon, was conceived as a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, aiming to recreate the holy places of Palestine near Moscow. The Istra River was intended to represent the Jordan River.
In 1781, Voskresenskoye was granted town status and renamed Istra, taking its name from the river. During World War II, Istra was occupied by German forces from November 26 to December 11, 1941. The town and the Resurrection Monastery suffered significant damage during the occupation.

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Istra serves as the administrative center of Istrinsky District. As a municipal division, the town of Istra is incorporated within Istrinsky Municipal District as Istra Urban Settlement.
