Irsina

Irsina is a town and comune in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is located in the hills overlooking the Bradano River valley.

History:

Irsina's history dates back to ancient times. The area was inhabited by the Peucetii, an ancient Italic people. The Romans conquered the region, and the town was known as Mons Irenaeus. During the Middle Ages, Irsina was ruled by various feudal lords. In the 15th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Naples. The town experienced a period of growth and prosperity during the Renaissance. Irsina suffered damage from earthquakes over the centuries, including significant damage in 1980.
